Description
For the past seven years, we have made our waterfront "rivah" home available for rent. Our guests have written us that they enjoy the peaceful setting, the beautiful harbor views and the relaxed atmosphere of rural living while still being within walking distance of an incredibly picturesque historic small town, Urbanna, Virginia.
In the summer months, there is a private community pool which is located steps away from our house as is the entrance to a long pier where one can get an up close view of beautiful local boats as well as many from distant ports. (It was the talk of the town when Barbara Streisand's yacht moored in Urbanna Creek and she and James Brolin went shopping for a black cooking pot!)
Both children and adults love the Farmer's Market where local artisans offer their handmade crafts for sale as well as baked goods and farm produce. Marshall's Drug Store has an incredible 1950's Back to the Future style lunch counter that is really worth visiting as is the local ice cream store with its delightful bovine decor!
We have left a notebook on the kitchen counter that contains interesting things for children to enjoy: a trip on "The Pearl" (Urbanna's old time trolley); a view of live buffalo: a local goat feeding area; another petting area with miniature horses and yet more goats! There is also a nearby indoor go-cart track if children are so interested.
Urbanna is located on the Middle Peninsula of Virginia and it is an easy drive to historic Jamestown,Colonial Williamsburg, or Yorktown. And for those of you unfamiliar with Chesapeake Bay history, Urbanna is the home of the Oyster Festival in early November. This is one of the largest festivals in the Chesapeake Bay region; tiny Urbanna swells to about 80,000 people for a weekend of family fun. Located seventeen nautical miles up the Rappahannock River from the Chesapeake Bay, Urbanna is a boater's paradise and a fisherman's treasure. There are boat slips in town that rent by the day or week. Our home is a very popular destination as we have several repeat guests that book early for the high season. We are also busy during the spring and fall with family reunions, wedding parties, golf parties, and school reunions at nearby historic Christchurch School.
